Nolan Ryan has told Mark Berman of Fox 26 in Houston that the Rangers have made a contract offer to free agent Lance Berkman.
Gerry Fraley says that Berkman is looking for a two year deal. Ryan didn't say whether it is a one year or a two year deal the Rangers have offered, but I think that it is likely a one year deal.
Berkman turns 37 in February, and appeared in just 32 games last season with St. Louis because of knee problems. However, Berkman had one of his best seasons in 2011 when he put up a .301/.412/.547 line for the St. Louis Cardinals.
If Berkman were to join the Rangers, he would presumably be the team's primary DH. At this point, the DH position is vacant, and I imagine the Rangers would like to add someone, either via a trade or free agency, to help solidify the middle of the lineup.
