The Texas Rangers have officially announced the signing of free agent Lance Berkman to a one year contract for 2013, with a vesting option for the 2014 season.
Berkman is expected to be the Rangers' primary DH for the 2013 season. He missed most of the 2012 season because of knee problems that resulted in a pair of surgeries.
To make room for Berkman on the 40 man roster, the Rangers have designated sidearming lefthanded reliever Tommy Hottovy for assignment.
Hottovy, 31, was acquired from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for a player to be named later or cash. The Rangers have ten days to trade, waive, or release Hottovy.
