What the hell is Craig Gentry? Well, at least as the Rangers have used him the past two years: a valuable player. He was second on the team in fWAR (really?) with 3.4 and fourth in bWAR at 3.6. His 2013 followed up a solid 2012 where he posted 2.8 fWAR and bWAR. Averaging over 3 wins as a part time player is pretty neat.
For his career, Craig has an 81 wRC+ against RHP. That's well below the typical values in the mid-to-low 90's of pretty much any right handed everyday player. But it's ticked up every year of his career and was an acceptable 95 for 2013. I'm not convinced that Gentry would be more valuable as an everyday player because of his injury history and career struggles against RHP, but with his absolutely stunning defense and excellent base running the optimist in me wants to try it and see what happens.
From a projection standpoint the LSB community did very well in projecting his playing time and performance, only really being off on Craig's OBP in a strong year. Good job Craig Gentry, you had as good a season as anyone could want.
Congratulations to Nips for having the lowest score* with his projection. Here is a spreadsheet with how everyone did.
