It has been announced that the St. Louis Cardinals have claimed outfielder Joey Butler off of waivers from the Texas Rangers.
Butler, a 15th round draft pick of the Rangers in the 2008 draft, was designated for assignment on Monday to make room for Nelson Cruz on the 40 man roster.
Butler was called up to the majors in August, after Cruz was suspended. However, once Alex Rios was acquired, Butler was returned to the minors. Butler was promoted when rosters expanded in September, but appeared in just six games, starting only three of them, and did not appear in a game after September 19.
Butler, who turns 28 in March, spent most of this year at AAA Round Rock. In three seasons in AAA, he has a career .300/.392/.468 line.
