The Texas Rangers are hot for free agent catcher Brian McCann, per Gordon Edes, who quotes a source as saying "They're knocking his door down."
Now, this is offered with the caveat that this is the silly season, there are lots of rumors out there, some of which are real, some of which are misinformation put out by various sources for various reasons (remember all that talk a couple of winters ago about how the Rangers were going to pass on Yu Darvish because they didn't have any money to spend?).
That being said, it wouldn't surprise me if the Rangers were being aggressive with McCann early in the process. They've got Geovany Soto locked up for one year at a reasonable amount, and they've said they are planning on going with Soto as their starter. In addition, the Rangers have tended to slow-play the offseason, and let the market come to them the last few years.
However, in this case, I can see Texas coming after McCann with a strong, early offer, giving him the opportunity to make a lot of money playing for a contender, and then moving on if he wants to take his time and see how the market develops. After last season, when the Rangers waited and waited and waited until they ended up being stuck with Lance Berkman and A.J. Pierzynski as the last guys standing, it wouldn't shock me if they tried to strike quickly this offseason with their top free agent target.
Or it could be nothing, like so many rumors end up being.
So we shall wait and see...this is definitely worth keeping an eye on, though.
