Shin-Soo Choo is a Texas Ranger, according to reports which indicate that the 31 year old free agent outfielder has agreed with the Rangers on a 7 year, $130 million deal that includes no options and a very limited no trade clause.
That would be, on average, $18.5 million per season, although Ken Rosenthal writes that Choo is getting about $5 million less this season, with $2.5 million more going in the 2016 and 2017 seasons, to give the Rangers more flexibility this season. 2016 is also when the Tigers start sending the Rangers $5 million per year to subsidize the Prince Fielder deal, for whatever that is worth.
About six weeks ago, we ran a poll where 76% of the folks here on LSB said we should NOT sign Choo to a 6 year, $115 million deal. The Rangers ended up giving him more than that. There's reason for short-term optimism, and there is reason for long-term pessimism on this deal.
In any case, now that it has been a few hours and we've had a chance for this to sink in, let's grade the trade...
What grade would you give this trade?
