Shin-Soo Choo contract details; Chris McGuiness designated for assignment

Shin-Soo Choo has officially been added to the 40 man roster, and Chris McGuiness has been designated for assignment

Shin-Soo Choo contract details: The Texas Rangers will pay Shin-Soo Choo $130 million as follows, per Evan Grant:

2014:  $14M

2015:  $14M

2016:  $20M

2017:  $20M

2018:  $20M

2019:  $21M

2020:  $21M

Choo is officially a Ranger, and to make room for him on the 40 man roster, the Rangers have designated first baseman Chris McGuiness for assignment.  McGuiness came to Texas from Boston in the Jarrod Saltalamacchia trade.  He was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the Rule 5 draft last season, but was returned prior to the season.  The Rangers then added McGuiness to the 40 man roster when he was called up to play first base when Mitch Moreland went on the disabled list.

McGuiness was 6 for 34 with a double, no walks and 13 Ks in the majors last year, and did not appear to be in the Rangers plans going forward.  It wouldn't be surprising to see the Indians put in a claim on him, given that they had enough interest in him last year to draft him and try to work out a deal to keep him in their organization.

According to the beat writers, Jon Daniels says that he doesn't expect any other major additions, that he expects Nelson Cruz to sign elsewhere, and while the Rangers are going to do due diligence on any other "marquee names" (read -- Masahiro Tanaka), their focus right now is on a righthanded bat, one who presumably would platoon at DH with Mitch Moreland and be able to play some first base.
