The Rangers have signed 42 year old righthander Jose Contreras to a minor league deal

Jose Contreras, Texas Ranger:  42 year old righthander Jose Contreras has signed a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers which includes a major league spring training invitation.

Contreras, a Cuban defector who signed with the New York Yankees in 2003 and has pitched with the Yankees, Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, Colorado Rockies, and Pittsburgh Pirates, appeared in just 7 games in the majors with the Pirates last season, allowing 5 runs in 5 innings.  Contreras had 33 minor league innings in 2013 while splitting the year between the Red Sox and the Pirates' systems, registering a 3.00 ERA.  In 2012, Contreras put up a 5.27 ERA in 13.2 innings as a reliever for the Phillies.

Contreras is a big name, but I would say that his chances of making the Opening Day roster are very low.

The Rangers have also announced that 25 year old righthanded pitcher Nate Adcock and 27 year old outfielder Bryan Petersen have been signed to minor league deals with invitations to the major league camp.
