MLB.com has released their top 20 prospect list for the Texas Rangers, and it is one of the more unconventional lists that I've seen.
As we discussed when the MLB.com top 100 prospect list came out, the big surprise was Luis Sardinas not just cracking the overall top 100, but coming in at #3 in the Rangers' very strong and deep system. Martin Perez is down at #6, about as low as you're going to see him on a Ranger prospect list, and just one slot ahead of Wilmer Font who, surprisingly (at least to me), is at #7.
Among the other somewhat idiosyncratic choices, Roman Mendez is at #14, Neil Ramirez is at #17, and Nick Tepesch is at #18. Although Tepesch maybe shouldn't be THAT surprising...there's some buzz that Tepesch could be this year's Justin Grimm, the somewhat off-the-radar minor leaguer who breaks out and ends up contributing at the major league level this year.
In any case, the individual prospect profiles include scouting grades and individual write-ups for each of the Top 20, so check it out...
