Per John Blake, the Rangers' Executive VP of Communications, Texas Ranger pitching prospect Roman Mendez had surgery for a stress fracture in his right elbow. As a result of the injury, Mendez will miss the rest of the 2013 season.

Mendez, 22, had left his last outing for AA Frisco after grabbing his right elbow. Mendez had a 1.82 ERA in 16 outings covering 24.2 innings for Frisco this season, striking out 24, walking 11 (including 2 intentionally), and allowing a single home run among 12 hits on the season.

Mendez, who is on his second option this season, came to Texas along with Michael Thomas, Chris McGuiness, and cash (which was used to sign draft pick Nick Tepesch) in the July 31, 2010, trade that sent Jarrod Saltalamacchia to the Boston Red Sox.

Mendez had a 4.43 ERA at three levels in the Rangers system last year, throwing 91.1 innings while splitting his time between the bullpen and the rotation.
