Texas Rangers Draft RHP Alex Gonzalez At #23

Oral Roberts starting pitcher Alex Gonzalez is the Rangers' first pick in the 2013 MLB Draft

With the 23rd pick of the 2013 MLB Draft, the Texas Rangers selected RHP Alex Gonzalez out of Oral Roberts University.

Gonzalez is listed at 6'3", 200 lbs, and his nickname is "Chi Chi." He's a righty who throws in the lower 90s with natural cutting action, a good slider, and a changeup that is a work in progress.

Gonzalez is not thought of as a high ceiling pitcher, but is someone who profiles as a relatively quick mover with mid-rotation potential.

If I'm not mistaken, this is only the third college pitcher the Rangers have taken with a first round pick. The Rangers took Tommy Hunter with one of their supplemental first round picks in 2007, and Tanner Scheppers with a supplemental first round pick in 2009.

Gonzalez wasn't really linked to Texas, in large part because he was someone expected to go earlier. Baseball America had Gonzalez ranked #19 overall, and Keith Law had him ranked at #16.
