I've made a poll to see what Lone Star Ball considers to be its favorite year of Texas Rangers baseball. Here's a look at the candidates:
1972 Texas Rangers
Reasons why they might be your favorite:
- They were the first Texas Rangers Team
- They wore cowboy hats on the field during introductions
- Ted Williams was the manager
Reasons why they maybe shouldn't be your favorite:
- They wore cowboy hats on the field during introductions
- They were 54-100 and terrible
- What are you 60 years old?
1977 Texas Rangers
Reasons why they might be your favorite:
- They were the first actual really good Texas Rangers team (94-68)
- The rotation had the likes of Gaylord Perry, Doyle Alexander, Doc Ellis, and Bert Blyleven in it
- The Rangers finished first in the American League in team ERA+, WHIP, and CGSOs
Reasons why they maybe shouldn't be your favorite:
- The Rangers had four managers in '77 including Eddie Stanky changing his mind about the job after one game
- The rotation also had the likes of Nelson Briles in it
- The Rangers led the American League in sac bunts with 116 (Next closest: Cleveland with 94)
1996 Texas Rangers
Reasons why they might be your favorite:
- You never forget your first Red October
- Juan Gonzalez won and totally deserved the AL MVP award (come at me, Adam)
- Ken Hill had an unheralded, yet amazing, 6.6 bWAR/6.2 fWAR season
Reasons why they maybe shouldn't be your favorite:
- Mike Henneman
- Mike Henneman
- Mike Henneman
1998 Texas Rangers
Reasons why they might be your favorite:
- The Rangers held off the California Angels to win the West and return to the postseason
- Rick Helling won 20 games!! (The third 20 game winner in franchise history joining Fergie Jenkins in 1974 and Kevin Brown in 1992)
- Juan Gonzalez had 100 RBI before the All-Star break and won (deservedly) the AL MVP again
Reasons why they maybe shouldn't be your favorite:
- Tuesday, September 29, 1998 NYY 2, TEX 0
- Wednesday, September 30, 1998 NYY 3, TEX 1
- Friday, October 2, 1998 NYY 4, TEX 0
1999 Texas Rangers
Reasons why they might be your favorite:
- The Rangers broke their team record for wins in a season
- The Rangers reached their all-time best 31 games above .500
- Pudge Rodriguez won the AL MVP (I don't care what Pedro did la la la not listening)
Reasons why they maybe shouldn't be your favorite:
- The Yankees once against quickly dispatched the Rangers in the ALDS
- The Rangers scored a total of one run against New York in October...again
- While an all-time great baseball story, Jeff Zimmerman was arguably the best pitcher on the team. It says a lot when your best pitcher is a setup man and former member of the Montpelier Barracudas in a French league
2010 Texas Rangers
Reasons why they might be your favorite:
- Cliff Lee pitched the Rangers to the ALCS as the Rangers made the postseason for the first time in the Michael Young Era despite being bankrupt for most of the year
- Josh Hamilton's return to baseball reached its climax with the 2010 AL MVP award
- And, well, this:
Reasons why they maybe shouldn't be your favorite:
- For five games in 2010, Joaquin Arias was the Rangers' first baseman
- I hear people really hate Rich Harden
- The Ranger lost the World Series because the likes of Andres Torres, Aubrey Huff, Edgar Renteria, and Cody Ross were blistering hot. That's just dumb
2011 Texas Rangers
Reasons why they might be your favorite:
- The Rangers finished the season with their best record ever (96-66)
- We witnessed the Year of the Napoli
- The Rangers played in one of the greatest World Series ever and had arguably their best season
Reasons why they maybe shouldn't be your favorite:
- Cliff Lee + Adrian Beltre never happened
- A little bit of light rain in St. Louis on October 26, 2011
- And, well, I think you know why
Obviously the 2012 Texas Rangers could be considered as they were technically a playoff team even as they were ultimately a massive disappointment. Even when considering that they might have been the most talented Texas Rangers team to ever take a baseball field, I've grown to sort of hate them for fading in late Sept.-early Oct. It was supposed to be the charmed third time, darn it!
The 2013 Texas Rangers obviously can't be anyone's favorite because Lance Berkman is a part of the team.
For me, I go back and forth between the 1996 team, 2010 team, and the 2011 team. Today, I'm voting for the 2011 Texas Rangers because good lord they were really good and they had Adrian Beltre.
Feel free to write-in your vote in the comments sections for any other specific year that you liked most of all.
