Infielder Adam Rosales has been claimed off of waivers by the Texas Rangers from the Oakland A's today.
No corresponding move to make room for Rosales on the 25 man roster has been announced, but it is anticipated that Engel Beltre will be optioned to AAA. The Rangers had a vacant 40 man roster spot already, so no move was necessary there.
Rosales, 30, is a career .220/.289/.334 hitter who has a .193/.268/.319 line. He can play all the infield spots, and has logged a little bit of time in left field, as well.
This moves appears to have been made in anticipation of Nelson Cruz possibly being suspended. If Cruz were suspended, then Jurickson Profar would likely end up getting significant time in the outfield and at DH. In such a scenario, the Rangers would likely want to have a backup infielder available on the bench, and they apparently think Rosales offers more value than bringing Robinson Chirinos or Chris McGuiness back up.
UPDATE -- Engel Beltre has been optioned to AAA to make room for Rosales on the active roster.
