Alfaro, 20, spent most of last season at low-A Hickory, and will start the 2014 season in either high-A Myrtle Beach or AA Frisco. Alfaro is raw, but has a pair of terrific tools in his power and his throwing arm, and is considered to be one of the Rangers' two best position prospects, along with second baseman Rougned Odor.
The two catchers ahead of Alfaro are Travis d'Arnaud, acquired by the New York Mets last season in the R.A. Dickey trade, and Austin Hedges, a 2011 second round pick of the San Diego Padres who was reportedly on the Rangers' radar that year, but who dropped because of bonus demands.
