Michael Young officially named special assistant to general manager

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

In an announcement that has been expected for a while, Michael Young has been named special assistant to the general manager by the Texas Rangers.

While many times, a special assistant to the g.m. role involves talking to some players at spring training and signing some autographs, Young is reportedly going to be involved at all levels, including scouting and player development, and was involved in the manager search that the team performed.

im on a plane, and so will have more to say about that when I'm somewhere I can opine at more length, but I think this is a very good thing.  It sounds like Young will fill the Nolan Ryan spot -- former player respected throughout the game who Daniels can lean on for advice, and who can potentially liaise with the players.  I wouldn't be surprised if this ended up being a situation where Young, if he wants, ultimately becomes a g.m. down the road.
