Rick Porcello has been traded from the Detroit Tigers to the Boston Red Sox for Yoenis Cespedes, per multiple reports.
Both Porcello and Cespedes are eligible for free agency after 2014. Porcello has been the subject of much discussion in recent years, as he has had strong peripherals that didn't match his weak ERA, an issue many blamed on the poor infield defense behind him. Last season, he finally had an ERA and FIP that were consistent, and ended up having a 4.0 bWAR season.
Cespedes, of course, is the controversial Cuban defector who is entering the final year of his 4 year, $36M deal he signed with Oakland a few years back. Cespedes went to Boston in the Jon Lester trade, and the BoSox entered the offseason with a bevy of outfielders, putting them in a position where they were expected to deal one of them for a pitcher.
The Tigers are also getting Alex Wilson and an unknown minor leaguer in this deal.
