Tampa Bay hires Kevin Cash as their new manager

Kevin Cash is reportedly the new manager of the Tampa Bay Rays

Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports

Kevin Cash is the new manager for the Tampa Bay Rays, per Ken Rosenthal on Twitter.

Cash, who spent the 2011 season with the Ranger organization at AAA, and then did advance scouting for them once the AAA season was over, was one of the three finalists for the managerial job here that ultimately went to Jeff Banister.

The Rays had narrowed their list of finalists to Cash, Raul Ibanez, and Don Wakamatsu, but then Ibanez opted to pull himself from consideration for the job earlier this week.

Wakamatsu, of course, was the Rangers' bench coach for a period of time, was a candidate during the manager hunt where the Rangers ended up hiring Ron Washington, and then went on to manager the Seattle Mariners for a period of time.

Cash seems like a good fit for the Rays organization, and is generally considered to be a smart, energetic, up-and-comer on the coaching/managerial scene.
