Texas Rangers rumors: Jurickson Profar to the San Diego Padres could be a possibility, according to Ken Rosenthal on Twitter.
Rosenthal suggests that the Padres need a shortstop, the Rangers have a surplus of MIFs, and so new Padres g.m. A.J. Preller, who was instrumental in the Rangers signing Profar as an amateur free agent, could look to bring one of his prize signees to San Diego.
I have a hard time seeing the Rangers making a move with Profar at this point...it seems like that, until Profar proves he is healthy, his trade value is going to be significantly depressed. Keeping Profar and letting him play in AAA this year to get him at bats and get him healthy would put Texas in a position where they have more flexibility during the year, or in the 2015-16 offseason, to move Profar, or Elvis Andrus, or Rougned Odor, should the right deal present itself.
On the other hand, you have to think that Preller is going to value Profar as highly as anyone, and is as familiar with Profar as anyone. If a team is going to give you close to what you think Profar is worth at this point, it is probably the Padres.
I wouldn't bet on Profar going to San Diego, and Rosenthal appears to be spitballing, rather than saying that this is something being discussed. But at the same time, Rosenthal is pretty plugged in with the Ranger front office, so this is something worth, at least, keeping an eye on.
