A.J. Burnett to the Philadelphia Phillies -- righthanded pitcher A.J. Burnett has agreed to a one year, $16 million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies, according to Ken Rosenthal (and others) on Twitter.
Burnett, 37, had a 3.30 ERA in 191 innings for the Pittsburgh Pirates last season, and had previously given indications he was leaning towards retirement. Over the last couple of weeks, however, word came out that Burnett was strongly considering returning, and Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington -- places near his home -- were the locales he was most interested in pitching for.
$16 million seems, to me, to be a lot of money for Burnett...he had a 1.7 bWAR in 2013 and a 2.2 bWAR in 2012, after having a net bWAR of 0 in 2010-11. He put up a 107 ERA+ in each of the past two seasons in 61 starts.
