Texas Rangers transactions: Kevin Kouzmanoff's contract has been purchased by the Texas Rangers, adding him to the 25 and 40 man rosters per John Blake on Twitter. To make room for him on the 25 and 40 man roster, the Rangers have designated pitcher Seth Rosin for assignment.
The Kouzmanoff addition was necessary to give the Rangers another infielder today, as Adrian Beltre has returned to Texas to have his left quad examined. Beltre's absence meant there was no backup infielder available for today's game.
It remains to be seen how long Kouzmanoff sticks around. If Beltre is only going to miss a few games, the Rangers could send him back to AAA once Beltre is ready to return, or they could keep him around and option Jim Adduci instead. If Beltre has to go on the disabled list, Kouzmanoff will likely be up in the majors for as long as Beltre is sidelined. The fact that the Rangers opted to drop Rosin to add Kouzmanoff at least suggests the Rangers think Beltre may not need a d.l. stay, as otherwise, they would have just d.l.'d Beltre, or at least sent down someone like Adduci or Daniel McCutchen who could then be recalled if Beltre were put on the d.l.
The decision to designate Seth Rosin for assignment is interesting, as he seemingly had impressed the Rangers, and was being used in relatively high-leverage situations out of the pen. A Rule 5 pick claimed on waivers late in the spring, the Rangers were going to have to keep him on the active roster all season, or else risk losing him on waivers. The Rangers now have 10 days to waive or trade Rosin.
The Rangers have another move imminent, as Colby Lewis will apparently be added to the 25 and 40 man roster this weekend. The Rangers could make a 40 man roster spot available by moving Jurickson Profar to the 60 day disabled list, though a move would still need to be made to open a 25 man roster spot up for Lewis.
