Thoughts on a 2-0 Rangers loss

Once again, the Texas bats failed to show up

Ronald Martinez

Blue Jays 2, Rangers 0

  • Yu Darvish was masterful yet again tonight.  While his fastball command wasn't as good as he would have liked, Yu still went 8 innings, struck out 11 batters, and walked just 3 hitters.  He allowed 5 hits all night -- 2 Adam Lind singles, 2 bunt singles in the 8th inning, and a Melky Cabrera double.  You'd think a performance like that would result in a victory.  Alas...
  • Yu was in trouble only once all game, when the Jays started off the 8th inning with back to back bunt hits by Erik Kratz and Anthony Gose.  Jose Reyes then hit a deep fly ball to right field that Alex Rios caught at the wall, which allowed Kratz to get to third base.  With runners on first and third, Yu was working Melky Cabrera low, trying to induce a double play ball.  Cabrera, though, went down and got good wood on a breaking ball on the lower inside part of the plate, and drove it down the right field line for a two run double.  It was the only rally the Jays had all night, and Cabrera hit a good pitch.  Its a shame that Yu's effort went to waste.
  • The offense was useless.  Leonys had a single and a walk, and one of the two times he got on base, he was thrown out trying to steal (albeit after Toronto challenged the initial safe call via replay).  Adrian Beltre had a single, and Rougned Odor had an infield single in the 9th.  That was it.  The only time the Rangers got a runner to second base, it was because Odor sac-bunted Leonys over.  Just a pitiful performance by the lineup.
  • A very disheartening game, on the heels of a very disheartening few days for the Rangers.
