The Texas Rangers have purchased the contract of catcher Chris Gimenez from AAA Round Rock, and have optioned catcher J.P. Arencibia to AAA, per John Blake on Twitter.
Arencibia, signed in the offseason to a one year deal to back up Geovany Soto, has been a major disappointment this year. With Soto out, Arencibia was initially the Rangers' starting catcher, but lost that role to Robinson Chirinos.
Arencibia will presumably get regular playing time in AAA, and see if he can get his bat going. Arencibia is hitting .133/.182/.233 on the season in 66 plate appearances. Gimenez, 31, has spent time in the majors with the Mariners, Indians and Rays, and was briefly on the Rangers' roster earlier this season prior to being outrighted to AAA. He was hitting .259/.352/.435 for Round Rock.
To make room for Gimenez on the 40 man roster, the Rangers have put Martin Perez on the 60 day disabled list.
