Texas Rangers 2014 draft picks: Rounds 3-10

Listing out the Texas Rangers' draft picks on Day Two as they are announced

Rich Schultz

Today is Day Two of the MLB draft.  The Rangers will have eight selections today, one each in Rounds 3 through 10.

As each pick is announced, I will update this post with the information on the latest selection.

Round 3, #95 overall -- Josh Morgan, high school shortstop, Orange, California.  Morgan was ranked #63 in the pre-draft rankings by BA, and wasn't in ESPN's top 100.  No individual tools that jump out, but a righthanded hitter BA describes as "contact-oriented."  BA says he's "an instinctive player with a passion for the game."

Round 4, #126 overall -- Brett Martin, LHP from Walters State Community College in Tennessee.  Listed at 6'4", 190 lbs, Martin turned 19 in late April.  Unless I missed something, Martin did not make the BA Top 500 draft prospect list.  This could be someone they are signing to a well-below-slot deal, so they can apply the savings to other draftees.

Round 5, #156 overall -- Wes Benjamin, a junior LHP from the University of Kansas.  Benjamin is listed at 6'1", 188 lbs, and doesn't turn 21 until July, but he had Tommy John surgery in March.  BA has him ranked as the #371 prospect in the draft.

Round 6, #186 overall -- Jose Trevino, a junior third baseman from Oral Roberts.  He's a righthanded hitter who had caught my eye earlier this week while reviewing the BA top 500 list, as he was listed as a "C/IF."  He played high school ball in Corpus Christi and set a state record for homers in high school, but never really found a home defensively in college.  Reading about him, he sounds like former Ranger catching prospect Max Ramirez...he can hit and has some pop, but probably can't stay behind the plate, and doesn't profile well at most other positions.  Trevino was apparently announced as a 3B, which is where he played this year for Oral Roberts, so I guess that's where the Rangers are planning on trying him.

Round 7, #216 overall -- Nick Green, a juco RHP from Indian Hills Junior College.  Green is listed at 6'1", 175 lbs, and turned 19 years old in March.  BA had him as the #424 prospect in the draft, noting he touches 95 mph with his fastball.

Round 8, #246 overall -- Erik Swanson, a juco RHP from Iowa Western Junior College.  Swanson is listed at 6'3", 220 lbs, and turns 21 in September.  I can't find anything of note about him.

Round 9, #276 overall -- Doug Votolato, a switch-hitting centerfielder from the University of Central Arkansas.  He's listed at 6'2", 190 lbs, and turns 23 later this month.

Round 10, #306 overall -- Seth Spivey, a senior catcher out of Abilene Christian.  Lefty hitter, 5'11", 180 lbs.
