Nick Martinez is hurt, could go on the disabled list

Nick Martinez tweaked a muscle in his back taking batting practice, and might not be able to make his next start

Joy R. Absalon-USA TODAY Sports

Nick Martinez was originally supposed to start on Sunday in New York.  Then his start was pushed back to Monday, because Yu Darvish's start was moved to Friday, then it was moved to Tuesday, supposedly so the Rangers could keep Miles Mikolas on regular rest.

Now, per Evan Grant, it turns out that all of those moves may have been triggered by Martinez injuring a muscle in his back while taking batting practice last Tuesday.  Martinez is to be examined today, but he hasn't thrown a bullpen session since tweaking his back muscle, and as a result, he may not be able to make his start on Tuesday.

Grant indicates that Phil Irwin or Ryan Feierabend could be called up to replace Martinez on the roster, although with Scott Baker having pitched on Thursday, he could make the spot start on Tuesday in place of Martinez and be on his normal rest.

We'll see what happens, but given how this season has gone, I'm expecting a d.l. stint for Martinez.
