Phil Irwin to start for Texas on Tuesday

Righthanded pitcher Phil Irwin will start for the Rangers tomorrow, with Nick Martinez being scratched

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Righthanded pitcher Phil Irwin will be recalled from AAA Round Rock tomorrow to start for the Texas Rangers against the Houston Astros, according to John Blake on Twitter.

The regularly scheduled starter, Nick Martinez, has been dealing with a muscle problem in his back suffered while taking batting practice last week.  There is no indication yet as to what roster move will be made to make room for Irwin, but the most likely option would seem to be Martinez going to the disabled list.

Irwin, 27, was claimed on waivers by the Rangers from the Pittsburgh Pirates in May of this year.  He's already on the 40 man roster, so no 40 man roster move will be necessary.

Irwin has a 2.41 ERA in 7 appearances (6 starts) for Round Rock this season, with 39 Ks and 18 walks in 33.2 IP.
