The Texas Rangers have optioned last night's starter, lefthanded pitcher Robbie Ross, Jr., to AAA Round Rock.
To take his place on the 25 man roster, the Rangers have purchased the contract of righthanded reliever Jon Edwards.
Edwards is a fascinating call-up, a guy who was an outfielder when he was first drafted, got released, pitched for Alpine in the independent Pecos League in 2011, then joined the Rangers organization in 2012, where he's been pitching ever since.
Edwards started the 2014 season in Frisco and pitched poorly, to the point there was some speculation he might be released. He turned things around and ended up earning a promotion to AAA Round Rock, where he has struck out a remarkable 26 batters in 15.2 IP, while walking 9.
Edwards is eligible to be a minor league free agent after the season, so this is an opportunity for the Rangers to take a closer look at him in the majors, and better evaluate whether he should have a 40 man roster spot this offseason.
