2015 MLB Draft: The Texas Rangers are most likely going to have the #1 overall pick in the 2015 MLB draft, which puts Rangers fans in a position that we haven't been in for several years -- really interested in what the very top of the draft is going to look like.
Its very early, and a lot of things can change, but there are rankings of the coming year's draft class starting to roll out, with Kiley McDaniel having his top 51 prospects up at FanGraphs today.
The top three guys are prep shortstop Brendan Rodgers, 2014 #1 overall pick Brady Aiken, and Duke righthander Mike Matuella, with McDaniel saying there is a big drop-off after those three.
Someone else that McDaniel talks about, who could end up being a factor in the Rangers' draft, is Texas high school shortstop Kyler Murray. He's the son of former Texas A&M QB Kevin Murray, and is committed to A&M as a quarterback in the 2015 recruiting class, but he's also a raw, toolsy guy with upside who McDaniel thinks could shoot up the boards this year. We know how the Rangers love their toolsy athletes, and teams with high picks, under the new rules, have been cutting below-slot deals so they have money to spend later in the draft. I'm wondering if Texas might use a couple of million in extra slot money by making such a deal to try to buy out Murray's football commitment, should Murray blossom this spring.
