Umpire Joe West has been suspended for one game for grabbing Jonathan Papelbon's jersey during an altercation on Sunday, according to various writers on Twitter.
Papelbon was ejected after grabbing his crotch in response to boos from the Phillies fans, and when Papelbon's suspension was announced, I noted that West's behavior seemed out of line, as well. Apparently, the MLB office agrees.
"Cowboy" Joe West has long been one of the more controversial umpires out there, one of those who seems to want to make himself the story and put himself in the middle of what is going on. It is rare for an umpire to be suspended, and I certainly didn't expect West to be suspended for his actions, though I think MLB did the right thing here.
UPDATE -- You can read Joe Torre's statement on the suspension here.
And interestingly, 31 years ago, Joe West was suspended for 3 games for shoving...Joe Torre.
