The Texas Rangers have acquired righthanded relief pitcher Gonzalez Germen from the New York Yankees for cash considerations, according to John Blake on Twitter.
Yesterday's trade for Yovani Gallardo opened up a 40 man roster spot which was apparently burning a hole in the Rangers' pocket...by adding Germen, the team's 40 man roster is now full.
Germen was designated for assignment last week when the Yankees acquired Chris Martin. The Yankees had acquired him for cash considerations from the Mets in December. Germen has a 4.31 ERA and a 4.15 FIP in 64.2 major league relief innings in the majors in 2013-14. The 27 year old is, I believe, out of options, and I suspect the Rangers will try to run him through waivers and outright him later this offseason.
Here's what Scott Lucas says about Germen:
Gonzalez Germen: 92-93 FB, change, slider. Good minor-lg control disappeared in MLB. Homer-prone. Misses bats. Introverted but not shy.
