24 days until pitchers and catchers report for spring training for the Texas Rangers.
One of the more thankless jobs in baseball is being the third base coach. No fan thinks their third base coach does a good job. Any time a player is thrown out at home, the third base coach is an idiot for sending him. And when a runner is held up at third and doesn't score, the third base coach is an idiot for not sending him.
So Gary Pettis got a lot of criticism over the past couple of years, when he moved from being the first base coach to the third base coach. And as the baserunning coach, he would also get jumped on when the Rangers would make a baserunning mistake, even though, during his time in Texas, the Rangers were one of the better baserunning teams in baseball.
In any case, Gary Pettis isn't a Ranger coach anymore -- while the Rangers were deciding on a new manager, Pettis opted to join the Houston Astros' coaching staff. Its an open question whether the Rangers would have brought him back for 2015 under Jeff Banister or not...that being said, he seemed like he did a pretty good job for the Rangers while he was here.
