Gallo, Mazara among Texas League top 20 prospects

Baseball America's top 20 prospect list for the Texas League includes two current and three former Rangers prospects

The Baseball America top 20 prospect list for the Texas League is out, and two current and three former Rangers prospects made the cut.

Joey Gallo was ranked #2 on the BA Texas League list, behind only Dodgers righthanded lefthanded phenom Julio Urias.  Gallo put up a .314/.425/.636 line in his two months at AA, and BA says scouts think he can hit .250 in the majors, which would make him a star, given his walk rate and power.

The other current Ranger on the list is Nomar Mazara, who checks in at #12 -- lower than I would have expected, but the league top 20s tend to be more idiosyncratic than the overall lists.  Mazara put up a .284/.357/.443 line as a 20 year old before earning a late season promotion to AAA, and a scout is quoted as saying that "[t]he ball just sounds different off his bat."

Meanwhile, three former Rangers who went to Philadelphia in the Cole Hamels trade also made the top 20 list.  Nick Williams checked in at #7, Jorge Alfaro at #14, and Jake Thompson at #17.
