Texas Rangers rumors: Rangers in talks about catcher trade

T.R. Sullivan says that the Rangers are exploring a potential trade for a backup catcher

Texas Rangers rumors:  The Rangers are looking into a deal for a backup catcher, according to T.R. Sullivan on Twitter.  Sullivan says that such a deal would potentially impact the Rangers' decisions on potential non-tenders, which have to be made by tonight.

My initial thought is that the Rangers are looking at a deal for someone who would represent an upgrade over Chris Gimenez, who is the only catcher (other than Robinson Chirinos) currently on the 40 man roster.  Gimenez is arbitration-eligible, but if the Rangers can get someone better, they could then non-tender Gimenez, who is out of options.

Alternatively, the Rangers could be trying to acquire a third catcher who has options available, who they could stash at AAA, but would potentially non-tender someone else -- Tanner Scheppers and Nick Tepesch would come to mind -- in order to keep a 40 man roster spot available for the Rule 5 draft next week.
