Texas Rangers rumors: Prince Fielder is or is not available, and the Rangers are or are not gauging interest in him, depending on whether you believe the rumor mill or the Rangers' p.r. folks, as we continue to deal with the exciting, conflicting world of Winter Meetings rumors.
Evan Grant tweeted earlier this afternoon that the Rangers were "surveying clubs' interest in picking up [the] bulk of Fielder's contract," without any success. There was subsequent word from the beat guys on Twitter that Jon Daniels, via the team's "PR rep," said the Rangers aren't shopping Prince, with one source of Jeff Wilson's saying there hadn't even been "any conversations with other clubs" on Prince.
Evan went on to say that he thought the Rangers were just doing due diligence, which makes sense, though word of that leaking out is potentially problematic when you are talking about a prominent veteran who is viewed as a clubhouse leader...remember, when the Rangers did the Ian Kinsler/Prince Fielder trade, both teams worked quickly and quietly to ensure that either a deal was going to happen or not happen without any leaks.
So, yeah, I tend to think that the Rangers at least have put out feelers to see if anyone out there would be willing to take Prince's 5 year, $90 million deal off their hands. And there's probably little to no interest, but the front office probably felt the need to be pro-active in squashing any rumors about them looking to move Prince, lest they ruffle feathers.
Its all the dance that we do around the hot stove, and after all the tweeting and talking and blogging, it likely is much ado about nothing.
