Yoan Moncada, the 19 year old Cuban infielder who has been wowing teams in private workouts, is officially a free agent, writes Jeff Passan.
Moncada is now eligible to sign with any major league team. The Red Sox, the Yankees, and the Dodgers are considered the favorites to sign Moncada. Texas cannot sign any international free agent under the age of 23 to a contract worth more than $250,000 until July 2, due to penalties for going over their bonus pool last summer. Moncada was a possible target for Texas only if he wasn't cleared to sign until July.
Moncada is expected to command a bonus in the $30-40 million range, which would mean an outlay of as much as $80 million for the signing team, once penalties for exceeding the international bonus pool are assessed. Moncada is considered to be one of the best players from Cuba, a player with star potential.
