The Texas Rangers have purchased the contract of Wandy Rodriguez from AAA Round Rock today. To make room for him on the 25 and 40 man roster, they designated pitcher Logan Verrett for assignment.
Rodriguez was signed to a minor league deal a few weeks ago to provide starting pitching depth. With Derek Holland out for a couple of months, and the young arms not quite ready, Wandy is going to start for Texas tonight, and will likely get a chance to make a few starts to see if he has anything left in the tank.
Verrett was a Rule 5 pick out of the Mets organization who was claimed on waivers by the Rangers at the end of spring training. He was not terribly impressive in his four outings, and was criticized by Jeff Banister after Wednesday's game for failing to cover first base on a play. If he clears waivers, the Rangers have to offer him back to the Mets for $25,000, although they can also attempt to work out a trade.
