In an effort to get reinforcements for the bullpen, the Rangers have recalled righthanded reliever Jon Edwards from AAA Round Rock. To make room for Edwards on the 25 man roster, Texas optioned outfielder Jake Smolinski to Round Rock.
This leaves the Rangers, once again, with a three man bench, which somewhat reduces the amount of flexibility Jeff Banister has in terms of resting players and making late-game moves (although he hasn't appeared too inclined to give the regulars much rest thusfar). The flip side is that Texas has an eight man bullpen again, which gives Banister more options and the ability to pull a struggling starter earlier, if need be.
Edwards was up briefly earlier in the year, when he pitched in one game and walked both batters he faced. He's been outstanding for Round Rock, putting up a 1.15 ERA in 15.2 IP, striking out 20, walking 5 and allowing just 10 hits and one home run. He will likely get a look in a middle relief role.
