The Texas Rangers have purchased the contract of righthanded pitcher Chi Chi Gonzalez. To make room for Gonzalez on the 25 man roster, the Rangers have designated infielder Thomas Field for assignment.
Gonzalez was scratched from his start with Round Rock on Thursday, and announced yesterday as today's starting pitcher. He will be making his major league debut tonight against the Boston Red Sox, with Jon Daniels saying that this is not a spot start, but rather, Gonzalez being made a member of the rotation going forward.
Field was called up in early May when Rougned Odor was sent down. He had been splitting time at second base with Adam Rosales, and was hitting .195/.250/.366 in 45 plate appearances. The Rangers will have 10 days to trade, waive or release Field. My expectation is that he will clear waivers, and Texas will ask him to accept an outright assignment at Round Rock.
