Kyle Blanks to the disabled list, Anthony Ranaudo recalled

The Rangers have placed Kyle Blanks on the disabled list to make room on the active roster for Anthony Ranaudo

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The Rangers had to make a roster move before tonight's game in order to bring starting pitcher Anthony Ranaudo up.  Less than an hour before gametime, it was announced that Kyle Blanks has been placed on the 15 day disabled list with issues with his Achilles.

Blanks has been solid for Texas, putting up a .313/.352/.522 line while platooning at first base, but the knock on him throughout his career is that he can't stay healthy.  That's been the case this season, with Blanks starting the season in AAA because of Achilles issues, being placed on the d.l. because of a cyst, and now returning to the d.l.

With the Rangers approaching a potential roster crunch, Blanks could find himself without a roster spot when he's ready to return, although the fact he's a righthanded hitter on a mostly lefthanded hitting team could save him.

Ranaudo is being called up to make a spot start, after which he will be optioned.  With Blanks going on the d.l., it appears likely that Ryan Rua will replace Ranaudo.  Rua is on the 60 day d.l., so activating him will require the team to clear a spot on the 40 man roster for him.
