Jake Smolinski claimed by the Oakland A's

The A's have claimed Jake Smolinski on waivers from the Texas Rangers

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

Jake Smolinski, who was designated for assignment on Friday to make room on the 40 man roster for Ryan Rua, has been claimed on waivers by the Oakland A's.

The A's and Rangers have a recent history of claiming each others players...the Rangers and A's took turns waiving Adam Rosales and claiming him from each other a couple of years ago, Andy Parrino was claimed by the Rangers from the A's last spring only to be waived six weeks later and re-claimed by the A's, and Alex Hassan was waived by the A's, claimed by the Rangers, then waived by the Rangers and claimed by the A's earlier this year.

Smolinski, a 2nd round pick of the Nationals in 2007, was signed as a minor league free agent prior to the 2014 season by the Rangers, and ended up getting called up to the majors and playing well when he was healthy, although he spent a good chunk of the year on the d.l.

Smolinski has been awful in the big leagues this season, though, and hardly ever played after getting brought back up in late May.
