After yesterday's bullpen-taxing disaster, the Rangers needed to get some fresh arms up as reinforcements today, and thus have recalled righthanded pitcher Jon Edwards and lefty Alex Claudio from AAA Round Rock.
Phil Klein, who did yeoman's work in throwing 5 IP in the last two days while allowing 0 earned runs, was rewarded by being sent down to clear a 25 man roster spot. This isn't surprising, since Klein's heavy workload the past two days -- he threw 38 pitches Monday and 49 pitches yesterday -- likely has him unavailable for the next several days, and so he's expendable to get a fresh arm up and in the pen.
To clear the other roster spot, the Rangers have designated for assignment lefthander Wandy Rodriguez. Wandy was removed from the rotation earlier this month, and has pitched just twice since July 10 -- a 1.1 IP outing on Sunday where he allowed 2 runs on 4 hits, and yesterday's disaster where he allowed 7 runs in 1 IP.
The Rangers were already looking to deal Wandy in advance of Friday's trade deadline, and they now have 10 days to waive, trade or release him.
With Wandy being DFA'd, Texas now has 38 players on the 40 man roster.
