Nick Martinez optioned, Chi Chi Gonzalez recalled

The Rangers have optioned pitcher Nick Martinez to AAA to make room for Chi Chi Gonzalez on the 25 man roster

Jesse Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

The Texas Rangers have optioned starting pitcher Nick Martinez to AAA Round Rock in order to open a 25 man roster spot for today's starter, Chi Chi Gonzalez.

I had assumed that Anthony Bass, the team's long reliever who threw a bunch of pitches yesterday, would be sent down.  Martinez going down suggests that Chi Chi will stay in the rotation for at least one more start, and that Cole Hamels will likely be making a start in the next few days.  Of course, if Hamels lands on the disabled list (his being scratched is why Chi Chi is starting today), Martinez can be recalled without waiting the usual 10 days after being optioned.

In the meantime, Derek Holland is making a rehab start on Friday for Round Rock, and he is likely to re-join the rotation either after that start, or after one additional rehab start, so Chi Chi's stay in the rotation is likely to be a short one either way.
