Texas Rangers recall Hanser Alberto, DFA Adam Rosales

The Rangers have DFA'd Adam Rosales to clear a 40 man roster spot for Derek Holland, and have recalled Hanser Alberto

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

The Texas Rangers had to make a move today to clear a 40 man roster spot for Derek Holland, who is being activated from the 60 day disabled list.

That move has now been announced, with utility infielder Adam Rosales being designated for assignment.  Taking his place on the active roster is Hanser Alberto, who has been recalled from AAA Round Rock.

Rosales being DFA'd is a somewhat surprising move, but with Leonys Martin trying rest and rehab to attempt to return to the active roster in September, and Michael Choice being DFA'd yesterday to clear roster room for Will Venable, there weren't any other real obvious candidates to be dropped from the 40 man roster.  Texas could have, conceptually, moved Carlos Corporan to the 60 day d.l., but otherwise, they would have had to have DFA'd someone like Roman Mendez or Jon Edwards.

My guess is that the Rangers will look to run Rosales through waivers, and get him to accept an outright assignment and look to bring him back when rosters expand in September, possibly in place of Bobby Wilson or Chris Gimenez, once Corporan and Robinson Chirinos are back.
