Adam Rosales elects free agency

Adam Rosales has cleared waivers and will elect to become a free agent rather than accept an outright assignment

Jim Cowsert-USA TODAY Sports

Adam Rosales has cleared waivers and has elected to become a free agent rather than accepting an outright assignment, according to the beat guys on Twitter.

Rosales had been the team's utility infielder all season, but was designated for assignment earlier this week when the Rangers needed to open up a 40 man roster spot to make room for the newly acquired Will Venable.

Rosales will be eligible to sign with any team once he is officially released.  I had speculated that perhaps he would accept an outright assignment and come back to the majors with Texas once rosters expand in September.

I guess it is possible that Rosales could re-sign with Texas anyway.  With the 40 man roster now standing at 39, Texas could add Rosales and send Hanser Alberto (who replaced Rosales on the 25 man roster as the UIF) down until rosters expand on September 1, which would give the Rangers a little additional bench depth for the final month.
