The Texas Rangers have signed Drew Stubbs to a minor league contract, according to John Blake on Twitter, and have assigned him to AAA Round Rock.
Stubbs is a former first round draft choice of the Cincinnati Reds (#8 overall in 2006) who was traded to the Cleveland Indians in the deal that sent Shin-Soo Choo to Cincinnati prior to 2013. Stubbs then was sent to Colorado prior to the 2014 season, and was DFA'd by the Rockies earlier this month.
Stubbs gives the Rangers some additional depth in the outfield, something they can use with the uncertain status of Leonys Martin and Josh Hamilton. If there were to be an injury or other issue with Delino DeShields, Stubbs would be able to come up and provide the Rangers with a backup center fielder.
Stubbs has a career .245/.319/.397 line in seven major league seasons, and had a .216/.286/.431 line while in Colorado this year. Stubbs is from Atlanta, Texas, and attended the University of Texas, which I suspect might have been a factor in regards to agreeing to a deal with the Rangers, which lets him finish the year with Round Rock.
