The Texas Rangers have recalled pitcher Nick Martinez from AAA Round Rock, and have optioned Spencer Patton to AAA to make room for Martinez on the active roster.
Martinez last pitched on August 23, and his recall gives the Rangers an extra long man in the bullpen after using Anthony Bass last night for 3 innings. Patton came into the game in relief of Colby Lewis in the sixth inning, but didn't record any outs while facing five batters, the final one, Edwin Encarnacion, hitting a home run.
Martinez seemed likely to be back soon after rosters expanded, and my guess is that the Rangers will use him as a middle or long reliever the rest of the way. Patton, as well, seems likely to be back up once his ten days in the minors expire.
