Roman Mendez, who was designated for assignment last week, has been claimed on waivers by the Boston Red Sox, per Pete Abraham.
Mendez was originally signed out of the Dominican Republic by the Red Sox in 2007, and was traded to Texas in 2010 as part of the deal that sent Jarrod Saltalamacchia to Boston. Mendez has struggled with injuries and control issues during his time with Texas, and although he has a 3.02 ERA in 44.2 major league innings over the past two years, he has been unable to seize a regular spot in the bullpen. With Mendez being out of options after this year, he will have to either be on the Opening Day roster of whatever team he is on at the start of 2016, or be put on waivers again.
