With Keone Kela currently sidelined with a sore elbow, the Rangers have opted to fortify their bullpen by recalling righthander Tanner Scheppers from AAA Round Rock.
Scheppers was dominant as the team's 8th inning guy in 2013, but missed much of 2014 with elbow inflammation after moving to the rotation and being the team's Opening Day starter. This year, he was expected to resume being the 8th inning guy, but an ankle injury slowed him early in the year, and he has had issues with injuries and consistency all season.
Still, like Joey Gallo, Scheppers is someone who can be an impact player when he's right, and so the Rangers will likely take a look at him and see if he can get into a good groove over the final month. Scheppers getting himself straightened out would give the Rangers another weapon in the late innings, and even if he doesn't, he at least gives Texas another arm to absorb some innings down the stretch.
Scheppers has a 5.66 ERA in 35 innings in the majors this year, and a 1.83 ERA in 19.2 IP in the minors.
