The MLB free agent season is about to kick off, with players officially becoming free agents now that the World Series is over, and Keith Law ranks the top 50 free agents in what he describes as the worst class he’s seen since he began ranking free agents in 2006.

The Rangers have six free agents, and four of them crack Law’s top 50 list. Ian Desmond is #10 on the list, the highest ranked Rangers, slotted between Josh Reddick and Aroldis Chapman. Carlos Beltran checks in at #14, and Carlos Gomez at #16 -- they sandwich Toronto outfielder Jose Bautista -- while Derek Holland is #42 on the list.

Holland, of course, will only be a free agent if the Rangers can’t trade him, but at this point, with no deal being struck, it appears likely the team will decline his option and let him hit the market.

Not making the list are Colby Lewis and Mitch Moreland.

Personally, I’d try to bring the Two Carloses back on one- or two-year deals, re-up Colby, and then see what I could do to find a solid mid-rotation starter to plug in, so that I’m not heading into 2017 with a Hamels/Yu/Perez/Colby/Griffin rotation. But that’s just me...
