James Jones sent to minor league camp

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Outfielder James Jones was sent to the minor league camp today, per John Blake on Twitter, as the Texas Rangers continue to cut down their roster in advance of Opening Day.

Jones was acquired by the Rangers from Seattle in the Leonys Martin trade, then non-tendered and signed to a minor league deal.  He was competing for a backup outfield position, but hasn't impressed with his defense, despite having terrific speed.

This moves leaves the Rangers with Ryan Rua, Justin Ruggiano, Drew Stubbs, Hanser Alberto, and Pedro Ciriaco fighting for either two or three bench spots.
