Nomar Mazara up, Shin-Soo Choo to the disabled list

Nomar Mazara is being called up to replace Shin-Soo Choo, who will be out 4-6 weeks with a calf strain

Rick Scuteri-USA TODAY Sports

Nomar Mazara is being added to the 25 man roster today by the Texas Rangers, with Shin-Soo Choo going to the 15 day disabled list, according to the beat guys on Twitter.

Mazara, 20, is one of the Rangers' "Big Three" position prospects, along with Joey Gallo and Lewis Brinson.  He put up a combined .296/.366/.443 line last year between AA and AAA, and has a 1288 OPS in three games this season in AAA.  He's a below average runner and defender, but has a big-time arm that plays well in right field, as well as an above-average approach at the plate, where he hits for average and power.

Choo strained his calf during warmups yesterday, and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.  The Rangers will likely use Mazara as the semi-regular right fielder in his absence, potentially in a platoon with Ryan Rua.

Still no word on who will replace Robinson Chirinos, who is out for potentially three months with a broken arm.  Brett Nicholas is apparently the anticipated call-up, but the Rangers may be looking to trade for a catcher, or could see if Chris Gimenez's leg is healthy enough for him to be activated from the disabled list.
